| Bids opened for new Memorial Bridge
Bids were opened this morning for the new Liberty Memorial Bridge over the Missouri River between Bismarck and Mandan. “The apparent low bid was $47,279,035.24, submitted by Lunda Construction Co. of Black River Falls, Wisconsin,” said David Sprynczynatyk, North Dakota Department of Transportation director. “It looks like we have a very good bid, below the engineer’s estimates.” The bid opening is the first step. Prior to awarding the contract, NDDOT will conduct a general review that includes analyzing project cost numbers, checking bond capabilities and assessing the contractors’ ability to meet Disadvantaged Business Enterprise requirements. Pending a successful outcome, the contract is awarded and executed within a two-to-three week period. “We look forward to moving ahead on this project,” said Sprynczynatyk, “and the possibility of a groundbreaking before Memorial Day.” The total cost of the bridge, including construction, right-of-way and engineering, is estimated at approximately $56 million. Lunda Construction submitted its bid for alternative A, the steel option. Industrial Builders of Fargo also submitted a bid for the steel option. No bids were received for alternative B, the concrete option. Bridge projects completed by Lunda Construction for the NDDOT include the MonDak bridge on ND 58 west of Williston and the Pembina bridge on ND 59 near Pembina. Work will begin on the new Memorial Bridge this summer. Traffic will be transferred to the new bridge from the existing structure in late 2007; completion is expected in late 2008.
